European Day of Languages

September 26th is the European Day of Languages, it is honoured all around Europe to mark the rich diversity of languages we have across our continent. At Havant Academy, we have decorated the atrium with the flags of European countries, this created a celebratory feel and reminded students about the countries that are our neighbours. Students learnt in tutor time some facts and figures about the languages of Europe - did you know that 75% of the world do not speak English or that over half the world’s population can speak more than one language? Students also learnt the words that we use every day in English that come from other European languages – for example, confetti, graffiti and orchestra are all Italian words!

Each department across the school has spent the day representing a chosen European language. For example, Science represented Swedish and Technology represented Dutch etc. Students have written the date in all these languages at the top of their day’s work in every lesson. The day has had a huge impact on students understanding of the diversity of European languages and many have spent the day wishing each other a “Happy European Day of Languages!”.
