Physical Education

Welcome to the Physical Education Department here at Havant Academy. Physical Education is a highly popular and consistently successful subject with 100% of last year’s Year 11 cohort achieving A*- C equivalent in the BTEC First Award in Sport.

As well as excellent results, we aim to provide our students with all the necessary tools to develop a lifelong love of sport and exercise so that when they leave Havant Academy, they are passionate about remaining fit and healthy.

The Department consists of the following Staff:

Mr L Sadler (Subject Leader)

Ms R Everett (Teacher of PE)

Mr A Hatherley (Assistant Principal & Teacher of PE)

Ms G Beames (Cover Supervisor & Teacher of PE)

Mr N Park (Progress Leader – Year 8 & 9 & Teacher of Science/PE).

KS3 Physical Education

In key stage 3 lessons, students are offered a range of team, net and aesthetic sports that will develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. Below you can find the sports being studied throughout the year.

Team Sports – Football, Rugby, Basketball, Rounders and Netball.

Aesthetics – Fitness, Dance, Gymnastics and Trampolining.

Net Sports – Tennis and Badminton.

Summer Sports – Athletics.

In the summer term, students are also offered the opportunity to run sports events for the local primary schools to develop their leadership, communication, organisational and communication skills. These opportunities offer an excellent chance to experience what it is like to study our BTEC sport award in KS4.

KS4 Physical Education

In years 10 & 11, students receive two lessons of core physical education per week. At KS4, lessons are much more focused on the importance of being active and maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle. In order to ensure students are as active as possible they are able to choose as a group, which sports they would like to play each half term. Whilst many of the skills required for these sports are similar to what they learnt in KS3, we provide the opportunity to play more untraditional sports such as Ultimate Frisbee, Zumba, Yoga and much more.

In KS4, our sole aim is to ensure students find a sport that they would like to pursue further once they move on from Havant Academy, whether competitively or recreationally. We also offer opportunities to take on leadership roles such as coaching and umpiring/refereeing to encourage those who wish to stay involved in sport but in a non-playing capacity.

Students who choose to study the BTEC First Award in Sport will receive 4 extra lessons a week that focus on the four units required to achieve the qualification. These units are: Fitness for sport and exercise, Practical sports performance, The mind & sports performance and Leading sports activities. Havant Academy PE takes pride in providing excellent sports leaders to organise and run a range of primary school sports events in the Havant and Waterlooville District.

Extra-curricular Enrichment Opportunities

We offer many fantastic opportunities for our students to develop their skills further in our extra-curricular sports clubs. These offer students the chance to compete against other school in a range of sports as well as allowing them to come along just for fun and recreational purposes. Over the past two years these clubs have grown in popularity across all year groups and genders.

We are currently competitively represented in year 7-9 boys’ football, year 7-10 boys’ basketball, year 7-10 girls’ netball, year 7-9 girls’ football and year 7-9 girls’ rounders. We encourage all students to attend a club and happily invite students to give suggestions of sports they would like to participate in throughout the year.

Please see below the timetable for Term 1 – 2017.
