Inclusion

At Havant Academy we strive to know our children well. This, we believe, is the key to providing high quality inclusive practice. We work hard to balance our knowledge of individual students with our knowledge of their barriers to learning to ensure all students are Ready, Respectful and Safe.

At Havant Academy, Inclusion starts in the classroom. We recognise that expert teaching and targeted support for children means more students in class making progress. Our graduated approach to support ensures that support is available when needed and at the appropriate level.

We understand the importance of relationships in developing an inclusive school and seek to work collaboratively with families to provide the best support we can.

Being an inclusive school is a main priority at Havant Academy. Our Hub provision in the Ridge Centre sits in the heart of our school – reflecting that Inclusion is central to all we do and something for which we have a shared responsibility.

Special Education Needs and Disabilities

The SEND Code of Practice says that ‘a child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her’.

A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:

  • has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
  • has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.

There are four broad categories of SEND:

  • Communication and interaction – such as Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Speech and Language difficulties.
  • Cognition and learning – such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Moderate Learning Difficulties.
  • Social, emotional and mental health – such as ADHD, Attachment Disorders, emotional difficulties and mental health difficulties.
  • Physical and sensory – such as a physical disability that impairs learning, hearing impairments and visual impairments

The school SEND, Accessibility and Intimate Care policies can be found within our policies area.

Any queries relating to SEND should be referred to SEN@havant-tkat.org in the first instance.
