Cyclists raise £30,000 for sensory equipment at entrepreneur’s former school with charity bike ride in support of The Ridge Foundation
A team of cyclists led by entrepreneur Darren Ridge raised over £30,000 in a sponsored bike ride to support young people at his former school.
A group of Darren’s colleagues and friends rode from his business headquarters in Whiteley to Havant Academy in Leigh Park, Havant. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, the event smashed its initial £20,000 target.
The riders were given a send-off by former Southampton football star Matt Le Tissier, and greeted by Pompey player Matt Ritchie when they returned from the 30-mile round trip.
The funds raised will purchase a Cubbie unit – an immersive multi-sensory space that can support students to reduce anxiety and encourages participation and prepare them for learning. The Academy has a large proportion of students who will benefit from this technology.
Darren was a pupil at the Academy when it was known as Wakeford Comprehensive School, and went on to found business communications specialist Onecom. He and co-founder Aaron Brown’s company Ridown invest in technology businesses including broadband provider Onestream and device recycling specialist WeBuyAnyPhone.
The Ridge Foundation was founded by Darren, and inspired by his own experiences, to help children and young people from challenging backgrounds to reach their full potential.
Darren said: “Every time I have revisited my former school, I have seen first-hand the challenges young people and their teachers face every day, and also how they achieve extraordinary things together.

“I would like to thank Matt Le Tissier, Matt Ritchie, all the riders, and all the sponsors who helped fund technology which will make a real difference to the wellbeing of students at the Academy.”
Headteacher Vicki Dillon-Thiselton said: “Our school has a high level of need, both in terms of the levels of deprivation of the children who come into the school, and their social, emotional, and mental health concerns.
“Thanks to this donation we will be able to fund technology which will greatly improve the lives of some of our young people, and support them in their studies. We are very grateful to everyone who took part in the ride, all who sponsored, and to Darren for his ongoing support for our school.”
The Ridge Foundation previously donated £30,000 to create The Ridge Centre at Havant Academy, which is fitted with technology to support students who find it hard to work in a classroom environment, and continues to support the school with a range of projects.

🐾 Bella’s Residential Training Update – Week 1 🐾 We’re excited to share Bella’s first update from her residential training programme as she continues her journey to becoming Havant Academy’s #therapydog 🐶 💚 Bella has settled in exceptionally well and is thoroughly enjoying her training. The team have been really impressed with her focus and enthusiasm - she is highly engaged and eager to learn, which is a fantastic foundation to build on. During her first week, Bella has been introduced to all of her core obedience skills, including sit, down, recall, heel, “leave it”, “middle”, and “send to bed”. She has picked these up very quickly and is already showing great understanding. A key focus moving forward will be building reliability - helping Bella to respond consistently by increasing duration, adding distance, and introducing distractions in different environments. Bella has also been exposed to a variety of experiences, including time with children, cats, and other dogs. She has taken everything in her stride, showing a calm, gentle, and stable temperament—an excellent sign for her future role supporting student wellbeing. Her trainers have also been working on strengthening her response to her name, which is already supporting a strong recall. Impressively, Bella is able to come away from play to return when called—great progress for such a young puppy. She is also learning how to settle in a busy household environment, an important step before transitioning these skills into real-world settings such as schools and public spaces. Like all puppies, Bella is still learning how best to communicate. She can sometimes bark when she is unsure or needs something, but this is being positively guided, and she is responding well as training is adapted to support her understanding. Overall, Bella has made a fantastic start to her residential training. We are incredibly proud of her progress so far and are really looking forward to seeing how she continues to develop over the coming weeks. We can’t wait to welcome her back to Havant Academy soon! 💙 #HavantAcademy #Bella #StudentWellbeing 🐾 TKAT - The Kemnal Academies Trust TKAT ACE Havant Borough Council Postcode Publications Front Lawn Primary Academy Sharps Copse Primary School Onecom Alan Mak MP St Alban's CE Aided Primary School Trosnant Junior School Tesco Teaching Personnel Corrigenda Connect4Families

We swapped ski boots 🎿 for something a little more comfortable later on and headed to the local shopping centre for a wander, a bit of retail therapy, and some well-deserved treats 🛍️ ☕️ Another great day 😊 Bring on day 3! 💙🏔️
